At the inauguration ceremony for its board in Rwanda, ‘Friends of the Global Fund Africa’ (FOFA) gave its first Award for Commitment against AIDS to a man of strong faith: Rev. Canon Gideon Byamugisha was, in 1992, the first practicing religious leader in Africa to declare publicly that he was living with HIV. He has since advocated actively for AIDS prevention campaigns.

The Rev. Byamugisha struggled through the loss of his wife, and the initially harsh stigma to found what later grew into the International Network of Religious Leaders living with and affected by ‘HIV/AIDS (INERELA+)’. This organization welcomes spiritual leaders from different faiths, including Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, and Muslims, now from about 20 countries, to plan and implement national programmes. Listen to his story.

" It is like someone telling you, 'I had an accident' and you say, 'Oh, so you stole a car!' Unsafe behavior can happen even when you are doing what is right ..."
