Global Fund Ambassador Carla Bruni-Sarkozy visited Global Fund-supported HIV programs in Benin on 27 January in her capacity as Ambassador for the protection of mothers and children against AIDS. Melinda Gates, Co-chair and Trustee of the Gates Foundation, joined Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy for this visit.
Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy and Mrs Gates visited healthcare facilities catering to maternal and child health, including HIV prevention and treatment activities for women and children. They met with women and children living with HIV and heard first-hand of the successes achieved, as well as the continuing strengthening of efforts in Benin by the National AIDS Programme to prevent the transmission of HIV from positive mothers to their children. Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy and Mrs Gates were accompanied by Professor Michel Kazatchkine, the Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, a major financer of HIV, TB and Malaria programs in Benin and more than 140 countries around the world.
