Kwa-Dabeka Self-Help Project
This income-generating project is aimed at people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Most of the project's participants are patients at the adjacent clinic where their HIV/AIDS status is managed and awareness programs on subjects like nutrition and treatment literacy are held.
The resources provided by the Global Fund have facilitated the following projects: the training of 113 people living with HIV/AIDS in gardening and beadwork; renovations to the main building; the purchase of a field plough and the protective gear needed to work in large-scale fields. Profits made from gardening and beadwork activities are split on a 70-30 basis (for participants and the resource project respectively).
Participants are involved in the following activities
- training in maintaining their own household gardens;
- working in a larger communal gardening project (two hectares) four times a week;
- training in planting techniques, where they are provided with gardening clothes and protective gear and seeds for starting the gardens;
- training in beadwork, with all materials provided. Beading classes are held twice a week. The crafts are sold within the community to traders and residents and their creations are also used for art exhibitions.
