Philanjalo Hospice

The Philanjalo Hospice, which is supported by the Global Fund, provides a range of services to people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. The organization is in collaboration with community-based organizations, faith-based organizations (Rock Life and Full Gospel), SANCA (South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence), the Department of Health, the Department of Welfare, the private sector (Spar Supermarkets) and also receives contributions from the Netherlands. Global Fund money has facilitated a number of activities, including the construction of new buildings which will be used to provide further services, training of caregivers and the purchase of a vehicle.

The services offered by the hospice include:

  • inpatient services for people living with HIV/AIDS
  • home-based care for approximately 900 people (delivered by more than 300 caregivers and volunteers, most of whom also come from the community)
  • an eight-week course for caregivers
  • support to over 300 orphans and their caregivers (with a focus on households headed by children or the aged)
  • assistance with school fees, food packages (delivered every five weeks), clothing and the provision of ARVs to orphans who need them.
  • counseling services provided by SANCA social workers to teenagers who are vulnerable to substance use
