The Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has just completed its Eighth Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition to approving US$ 968 million worth of grants, the Global Fund also took the significant step of approving voting rights for the “Communities” constituency (represented by an NGO representative who is a person living with HIV/AIDS or from a community living with tuberculosis and malaria). This constituency had previously been a non-voting member of the Board. In making this decision, the Board noted that the change reflects its commitment to the meaningful inclusion of affected communities in all aspects of its work. The final decisions of the Board (PDF - 307 KB) are now available.
The Fourth Round of proposals will be the last time the Technical Review Panel Chair, Professor Michel Kazatchkine, presides over the TRP process. Professor Kazatchkine has chaired the TRP since its inception in March 2002 and has been hugely influential in defining its working methods and approach. In his role as chair, he has consistently insisted on the independence, and excellence, of the TRP.
