The Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria held its Twenty-Second Meeting from 13 to 15 of December in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Each year, the Global Fund holds a meeting away from its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to offer delegates the opportunity to visit programmes financed by the Global Fund. This was the first meeting held in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. Site visits were organized in Georgia, Ukraine and Bulgaria.
This was the first Board meeting since the Third Voluntary Replenishment concluded in October 2010 which secured US$12 billion in funding for 2011 – 2013, including pledges from public donors, foundations, the private sector and other financing mechanisms.
Round 10 grants will be the first to be funded from the Third Voluntary Replenishment. The Technical Review Panel (TRP) recommended 79 disease components and separate cross-cutting Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) requests for funding, representing a total value of $1.73 billion (over 2 years), making Round 10 the third largest Round to date.
The Board adopted a series of measures to enable future funding opportunities, including the launch of Round 11 on 15 August 2011, with a submission due date for applicants on 15 December 2011.
The Inspector General presented an overview of his office audit and investigation activities since the Board’s meeting in April 2010. The Secretariat is working closely with the Office of the Inspector General and in-country partners to implement recommendations from audits and investigations in line with the Global Fund’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy for fraud.
