The Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis & Malaria has so far committed over $1.2 billion dollars to fight malaria worldwide, three-quarters of the funding going to Africa. The Global Fund is helping to finance 108 million bed nets to protect families from transmission of malaria and deliver 145 million artemisinin-based combination drug treatments for resistant malaria.
In sub-Saharan Africa only, approximately 3,000 people die from malaria each day, most of them children. However, only two percent of children in this region sleep under an insecticide-treated bed net.
In Tanzania, the Global Fund finances several programs worth US$80 million to roll out insecticide-treated bed nets and effective malaria treatment throughout the country. In addition to this program, the Tanzanian National Malaria Control Programme has begun a campaign to provide free insecticide-treated bed nets to every family in the Lindi and Mtwara Regions; the two regions which have the highest infant and under five mortality rates from malaria in Tanzania. This campaign is financed by individual donations collected through the Global Fund, the World Economic Forum and from a grant by UNICEF.
