Africa Malaria Day
Statement from the Executive Director of the Global Fund Michel Kazatchkine |
|
"The Global Fund has helped show that countries like Rwanda and Zambia can cut malaria deaths in half, and programs we support with the U.S. in Zanzibar have cut deaths by more than 80 percent. The Global Fund pays for two-thirds of international efforts against malaria. Our partners have delivered 18 million bednets and 23 million treatments in more than 80 countries. In short, malaria control works. If the richest nations expand their support at the June G8 meeting in Germany, we can dramatically reduce the one million deaths a year from malaria."
"The Global Fund has committed grants for almost $1.7 billion and distributed almost $1 billion to fight malaria. The Global Fund works closely with the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, including affected countries, multilateral programs like the World Bank and WHO, and the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, to make the best use of existing resources and reach as many people as possible with life-saving interventions." |
