Germany and the Global Fund |
Germany has been a continuous supporter of the Global Fund since its inception. Funding from the German Government is channeled through the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. With cumulative pledges and contributions of US$ 505 million ,Germany is the seventh largest donor to the Global Fund. At the 2007 G8 Summit, the German Government announced a contribution of four billion Euro to the fight against AIDS from 2008 to 2015 (500 million Euro annually). This is an increase of Germany’s 2007 annual AIDS assistance by 100 million Euro. The additional resources will be channeled through bilateral development cooperation, multilateral organizations, and the Global Fund. The specific allocation of the resources is to be determined in the 2008 budget negotiations.
Germany is represented on the Board of the Global Fund by Ms. Martina Metz of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Dr. Thomas Kirsch-Woik of German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) supports the Board’s German-Canadian-Swiss Delegation as Communications Focal Point. For details on Board composition please see Board Members page.
