Central Jail,
Bilaspur CHATTISGARH

Since the arrival of grant money from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, the Central Jail in Bilaspur has neither run out of TB drugs nor is it in short supply of testing materials needed for the prison’s laboratory. Like many jails the world over, Central Jail is faced with the challenge of overcrowded conditions which facilitates the spread of tuberculosis. The jail has an official capacity of 572 prisoners, but currently houses 1620. About a third of these prisoners is awaiting trial. To diminuish the spread of TB, prisoners are screened for TB and strict hygienic conditions are enforced. A TB awareness camp is also run regularly for prisoners.
