District TB Centre, Rajnandgaon CHATTISGARH
The district of Rajnandgaon is one of 16 districts
in the state Chattisgarh which is either implementing or preparing
to implement the highly effective DOTS strategy with Global
Fund support.
The DOTS strategy (short for Directly Observed Therapy Short-course)
is a World Health Organisation recommended tool to aid patients
in completing their full six month TB treatment. Full compliance
translates into being cured of TB. Key to the strategy are
DOTS providers, who watch and help as the patient swallows
anti-TB medication in their presence.
The District TB Centre in Rajnandgaon provides health services
for 1.3 million people. Each Senior Treatment Supervisor coordinates
a team of DOTS providers which in turn looks after a population
of half a million. "It would be much better if each Senior
Treatment Supervisor could look after just 250 000 people
to be more efficient," says Dr Anees, District TB Officer.
