Structured Abstract

Document Title: Private Sector Solutions to Global Public Challenges in Health - Opportunities for Collaboration. Financing Global Public Goods For Health - 714th Wilton Park Conference, June 19, 2003.
Institution: McKinsey & Company
Objectives: To describe how the private sector can contribute to global public health challenges.
Methods: This lecture presents many examples illustrating the different possibilities.
Results: Four basics forms of private sector involvement are identified:
  • assets: "while the primary responsibility for providing the resources to address these challenges should remain with governments, the private sector can provide important assets in targeted areas"
  • advice: "corporations and business associations can share their knowledge and experience with the public sector as well as share their best practices in the public health arena within the private sector"
  • actions: "corporations can play an even larger role in building systems and capacity at the local level, both on their own and in partnership with public sector and nor-for-profit organizations"
  • advocacy: "corporations can be vocal advocates on public health issues, both in response to short-term crises and to affect longer-term change".
