Institution:

Objectives:
To describe how the private sector can contribute to global public health challenges.
Methods:
This lecture presents many examples illustrating the different possibilities.
Results:
Four basics forms of private sector involvement are identified:
assets: "while the primary responsibility for providing the resources to address these challenges should remain with governments, the private sector can provide important assets in targeted areas"
advice: "corporations and business associations can share their knowledge and experience with the public sector as well as share their best practices in the public health arena within the private sector"
actions: "corporations can play an even larger role in building systems and capacity at the local level, both on their own and in partnership with public sector and nor-for-profit organizations"
advocacy: "corporations can be vocal advocates on public health issues, both in response to short-term crises and to affect longer-term change".
