Starting in September 2004, the GF began its first public awareness campaign, thanks to the pro bono support of the Publicis Groupe, an advertising and public relations conglomerate. We are now launching the campaign in the UK, Germany and Italy in June, as the world begins to focus on the subject of international development assistance before the G8 meeting in Scotland, July 6-9. Why are we doing an awareness campaign? As G8 members gather to discuss aid to the world's poorest countries, the Global Fund aims to grow grass roots support for its work to tackle AIDS, TB and malaria. We aim to show that increased aid can be used well and can make a genuine difference in the fight against poverty, by enabling local solutions for the disease that take 6 million lives each year. The campaign is also intended to acknowledge the major financial support of governments around the world who give money to Global Fund. What is the campaign about? The campaign is about "listening". In inviting grant proposals, the Global Fund "listens" to the people who ask us to invest in their work. We listen to the people who best understand the nature and extent of their problems and who are best qualified to come up with feasible solutions - local experts and communities. That is what "the right people" getting "the right kind of help" means to us. An integral part of this approach is that we also try and understand how Global Fund money can best be used to make the most of what is already being done in-country, and to fill in gaps between already existing efforts.
