In 2008, for a second year, the Global fund was honored to receive a contribution from American Idol, the top-rated show airing on Fox Television Network in the US. The money was raised during a special show called “Idol Gives Back”, which raised US$ 10 million in total for the Global Fund. These funds will go to support Global Fund-financed programs throughout 2009.
The purpose of “Idol Gives Back” is to raise awareness and funds for organizations that provide support for children and young people living in extreme poverty in the United States as well as in developing countries.
Of the US$ 10 million contributed to the Global Fund in 2008, US$ 9 million has been allocated to a Global Fund-financed grant fighting HIV and AIDS in the Western Cape Province in South Africa. The remaining US$ 1 million, donated by the M.A.C. AIDS Fund to the Global Fund through “Idol Gives Back”, helped support a Global Fund-financed HIV and AIDS grant in Jamaica.
The Global Fund has been receiving support from “Idol Gives Back” since 2007. To date, the contribution from the initiative totals US$ 16.6 million.
