Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited
In March 2010, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Takeda), Japan’s largest pharmaceutical company by sales, announced a commitment to the Global Fund of JP ¥ 100,000,000 (approximately US$ 1 million) annually, for the period 2010-2019.
The “Takeda Initiative” is an endowment program designed to support the Global Fund with the aim of developing and strengthening the capacity of health care workers in Africa. Takeda’s contribution marks a new chapter in Japanese corporate engagement in the global fight against the three diseases.
The resources from Takeda are directed to Global Fund-supported programs in Africa for health systems strengthening and human capacity development initiatives. In the first few years of the partnership, the contributions will support programs in Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania:
Nigeria
Scale-up of comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment, care and support
Training of staff members of not-for-profit and grass-roots organizations engaged in providing community-based care for HIV/AIDS patients and orphans, and carrying out advocacy and awareness raising activities.
Senegal
Reinforce tuberculosis control in Senegal
Developing capacity of health workers engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis.
Tanzania
National Insecticide Treated Nets Implementation Plan (NATNETS) for malaria prevention
Strengthening systems to distribute insecticide-treated nets and developing human resources for promoting the use and dissemination of nets.
Takeda also supports advocacy efforts to help raise the profile and visibility of the Global Fund in Japan.
Since the Global Fund’s inception in 2001, the private sector including businesses, business associations and individuals has contributed to the work of the Global Fund in a variety of ways, ranging from engaging in the governance of the Global Fund and contributions of cash and non-cash resources to collaborating with in-country partners and recipients.
“Takeda’s commitment to the Global Fund is deeply aligned with our corporate mission and with the United Nations Global Compact, of which we are a member. The Global Fund is an excellent vehicle for Takeda to contribute to and support people affected by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria while also helping to strengthen health systems in developing countries.”
