Reunión sobre un Mecanismo de Reposición
Suecia – 14 a 16 de marzo de 2005

Durante este evento, cuya sede ha sido ofrecida por el Gobierno de Suecia, los donantes del Fondo Mundial se reunieron para examinar las necesidades de financiación para 2006 y 2007 , así como el déficit en los recursos previstos para 2005. Esta reunión constituyó también para los donantes un foro para el intercambio de puntos de vista sobre las operaciones y la efectividad del Fondo.

El Fondo Mundial se financia mediante donativos de los gobiernos, fundaciones privadas, compañías e individuos. Hasta la fecha, más de 45 países, así como otros donantes han prometido 5.900 millones de dólares estadounidenses para apoyar programas del Fondo Mundial en todo el mundo hasta 2008. Sin embargo, con el sistema actual de aportaciones ad hoc es difícil planificar el trabajo del Fondo y ofrecer ayudas continuadas y previsibles a los 127 países que reciben subvenciones en la actualidad. En su sexta reunión de octubre de 2003, la Junta Directiva del Fondo Mundial decidió la creación de un modelo de financiación basado en una reposición periódica en lugar del sistema actual.

El proceso de reposición está presidido por el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, Kofi Annan, con Sven Sandström como vicepresidente. Del 5 al 7 de septiembre de 2005, se celebrará una segunda reunión sobre reposición en Londres, sede ofrecida por el Gobierno del Reino Unido.
