The malaria community commemorates Africa Malaria Day on 25 April to show solidarity with African countries battling against this pandemic. This day has been set aside by African governments committed to rolling back malaria and endemic countries all over Africa will be raising their voices in unison. The focus of this year's Africa Malaria Day is on the need to work in partnership to reverse the progression of malaria and make a significant impact in endemic countries: Leadership and Partnership for Results.

Facts about Malaria:

• Worldwide, between 350 and 500 million new cases of malaria occur annually.
• More than one million people because of malaria each year, most of them children under five.
• Africa is the continent with highest burden of malaria; malaria is endemic in 42 African countries.
• An estimated 90 percent of all malaria deaths occur in sub- Saharan Africa- an estimated 3,000 African children every day.
• In most endemic areas of Africa, pregnant women are the main adult risk group for malaria.

The Global Fund is the world’s largest external financier of malaria programs, providing 2/3 of all international malaria spending, worldwide. Global Fund-supported programs – as well as efforts financed by others – have already shown tremendous promise and substantial impact in the fight against malaria.
