AIDS is increasingly taking on a woman's face. Millions of women are at risk from HIV while social, cultural and economic factors prevent them from protecting themselves against infection. The traditional prevention strategies are not effective in protecting these women. We must roll out large-scale prevention programs which reduce women's exposure to risk and allow them to protect themselves. The Global Fund will finance such programs in all countries which face large or growing epidemics.

Fighting AIDS in Cambodia

Cambodia, a country with one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Asia, is showing encouraging progress in the fight against the spread of the virus. The number of new infections has gone from 100 a day in 1997 to 20 in 2004.

In explaining the sustained decrease in prevalence rates from over 4% to 2.4%, UNAIDS attributed the drop to political commitment, a strong response from civil society and a wide range of activities by the Ministry of Health, including a 100% condom use program.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria has approved US$ 25 million over two years and US$ 67 million over five years to help scale up successful prevention, care and treatment programs implemented by government and civil society. Among the most successful are prevention activities aimed at high risk groups, including military personnel in port cities like Sihanoukville and sex workers in Phnom Penh, as well as marginalized minority groups in far-flung provinces like north-eastern Rattanakiri.
