The Eastern Europe and Central Asia Cluster of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria together with the UNDP office in Kyrgyzstan organized a Central Asia Regional meeting “Accelerated Implementation of programs on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria in Central Asia” from 14–16 November 2006 in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The goal of the meeting was to bring together Global Fund’s grant recipients (both governmental institutions and civil society organizations) from the Central Asia countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as partners and donors working in the field of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria in the Central Asia region in order to discuss acceleration of the implementation of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria programs in the region, benefit from each-other’s experiences and identify ways of a better cooperation. The main themes of the meeting were threefold:

1. Clarify the principle of performance-based funding in the grant implementation (management, finance, procurement, monitoring and evaluation);
   
   
2. Streamline the involvement of the civil society in the program implementation; and
   
   
3. Improve coordination among partners and donors.
   
   

The meeting’s format included thematic working groups, discussions in plenary, individual questions and answers sessions, as well as site visits relevant to HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria programs.
