The documentary: In collaboration with the Global Fund, the US television channel VH1 turns its lens on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic in a new feature-length documentary profiling the work of 2 Global Fund-supported HIV/AIDS programs. VH1 followed Grammy-winner India.Arie on her visit to the Kenyan Network of Women with HIV/AIDS in the slums of Nairobi, while Golden Globe-winning actress and YouthAIDS ambassador Ashley Judd visited YouthAIDS prevention sites among commercial sex workers and teenagers in Madagascar.

As the two young women took part in the daily work of outreach workers and educators, and visited some of those most vulnerable to the pandemic, they experience first hand the reality of HIV/AIDS in these countries. Their experiences inform this powerful narrative of what life is like for those on the frontlines of the fight against this killer disease.

Premiered on VH1 in the US only - August 23rd 2005 8 p.m. EST

Further air times are Thursday, Sept 1 at 1:30 am, Friday, Sept 2 at 12 pm and Sunday, September 4 at 3pm

The Global Fund in Kenya The Global Fund in Madagascar

In Nairobi, India.Arie joined KENWA project manager Wangechi Kainga on visits to some of this capital city’s poorest slums, where those affected by HIV/AIDS are often beyond the reach of other channels of support.

KENWA, or the Kenyan Network of Women with HIV/AIDS, is a grassroots community-based organization created and run by women who are themselves living with HIV/AIDS. With Global Fund support, KENWA operates 7 centers in the slums of Nairobi, where most residents are unable to afford food, medicine, or education.

Outreach workers and care-givers like Lynn, who is featured, strive to challenge stigma, discrimination and isolation felt by women living with HIV/AIDS, and to provide daily emotional and practical support to women and children affected by the diseases. KENWA is one of 6 Global Fund grants to Kenyan organizations fighting AIDS, TB and Malaria.

YouthAIDS ambassador Ashley Judd, visited YouthAIDS Madagascar, an organization on the front lines of efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in this island nation. Ashley accompanied YouthAIDS peer educators as she visited with adolescents, and PSI’s Dr Rene as she visited with commercial sex workers, conducting workshops and promoting testing and prevention of secuallty-transmitted infections.

Through the circumstances of those Ashley visited, the documentary explores this critical moment in Madagascar’s efforts against the pandemic: With an HIV prevalence rate that is still relatively low, effective prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission can yet prevent the rapid escalation of the epidemic to the scale which has devastated so many African countries.

YouthAIDS is a global initiative of the non-profit organization Population Services International (PSI), which works in over 60 countries to educate and protect young people from HIV/AIDS. The PSI/YouthAIDS Madagascar grant is one of 8 Global Fund grants in Madagascar to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.
