I have today been informed by our Executive Director, Michel Kazatchkine, of his decision to step down from that position by 16 March 2012.
Few individuals have played a more central role in the creation and evolution of the Global Fund than Michel. The Global Fund as we know it today, the millions of lives it has saved, and the many other successes and innovations with which the Fund is associated, all bear Michel’s imprint. Most importantly, his unwavering commitment to health, to human rights and to supporting the weakest and the unprotected, has helped shape the Global Fund into the beacon of hope it is today for tens of millions of people around the world.
Michel has always demonstrated the utmost personal integrity. It is with deep respect that I accept his resignation. I also express my great appreciation for his commitment to an orderly transition to the new General Manager, who will start his work in early February.
I thank Michel for his remarkable contribution and I look forward to working with him to ensure an efficient transition.
Sincerely, Simon Bland Chair, the Global Fund Board
