Sri Lanka: Malaria Eliminated, Challenges Remain

13 January 2017

Villagers gather for a malaria awareness meeting in Diganwewa village, Puttalam, Sri Lanka. A Global Fund-supported national strategy using community engagement, effective surveillance and prompt treatment has resulted in zero locally transmitted malaria cases in almost four years. In September 2016, Sri Lanka was officially certified by the WHO as having eliminated malaria. But the government stays vigilant, as reintroduction of malaria from imported cases remains a threat.
