Geneva - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria today welcomed the payment by Japan of the second and final tranche of its total 2012 contribution of US$ 343 million, the highest annual amount that Japan has ever made in 10 years of vigorous support for the Global Fund.

The payment of the second tranche of US$ 127 million follows a first payment of US$ 216 million which was made in March.

"Japan has once more shown with this vote of confidence in the Global Fund that it is a leader in the fight against disease," said Gabriel Jaramillo, General Manager of the Global Fund.

The payment comes three weeks after the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria appointed as its new Executive Director Mark R. Dybul, a former United States Global AIDS Coordinator. Dr. Dybul will take up his appointment in January.

This new contribution represents a significant increase over Japan's previous highest contribution of US$ 247 million in 2010. In 2011, Japan's contribution was reduced to US$114 million following the earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeast Japan in March 2011. This new contribution demonstrates the strength and steadfastness of Japan's commitment to the Global Fund.

Japan committed in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to contribute US $343 million as part of its pledge of US$ 800 million to the Global Fund announced at the third Replenishment Conference in 2010.

Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said: "Japan is pleased to disburse the second payment of US$ 127 million for our 2012 contribution, to fulfil the pledge announced at Davos. This Contribution demonstrates our strong support for the new leadership of Mark Dybul. As a founder of the Global Fund, we are committed to working with the Fund to save more lives from the three infectious diseases and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals."

Japan's leadership in the Global Fund began when a summit of G8 nations called for the creation of such a global financing organization in 2000 in Okinawa, Japan.

The contribution received this week raises Japan's total contribution to US$ 1.74 billion, making it the fifth largest donor to the Global Fund.
