Dr. Jeremiah Chakaya Elected New Chair of Technical Review Panel

06 July 2017

The Technical Review Panel, a pool of independent experts who analyze the technical merit of all funding applications to the Global Fund, has elected a new chair, Dr. Jeremiah Chakaya Muhwa, a world-renowned expert in tuberculosis from Kenya.

Dr. Chakaya is President of the Board of Directors of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. Until recently, he was the chief research officer for the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and led the National TB Control Programme as its head from 2003 to 2006, and continues to act as a technical expert for the National Programme.

Dr. Chakaya is also technical advisor and executive director of the Kenya Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. On the international stage, Dr. Chakaya has been active in both the Stop TB partnership and at the World Health Organization, serving as the chair of the DOTS Expansion Working Group of the STOP TB Partnership as well as chair of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Tuberculosis at WHO. A passionate teacher, he remains a practicing clinician to this day.

“It is a privilege to help the TRP contribute to the development of strategies that will save millions of lives across the world and improve the welfare of people suffering from HIV, TB and malaria,” Dr. Chakaya said.

Dr. Chakaya replaces Dr. Lucie Blok of the Netherlands.

The Technical Review Panel, known as TRP, consists of experts in HIV, TB, malaria, health systems and cross-cutting development issues. Each request for funding submitted to the Global Fund is thoroughly evaluated for technical merit as well as strategic focus by the TRP. Beyond making funding recommendations, the TRP has an important role to play in the development and implementation of the Global Fund strategy as an advisory body to the Global Fund Board.
