Malawi Accelerating Progress against HIV, TB and Malaria

09 November 2017

LILONGWE, Malawi – Malawi and the Global Fund strengthened their partnership by signing four grants today worth a total of US$460 million. The funds seek to expand interventions for HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, including efforts to reach more than 800,000 people in Malawi with treatment for HIV by 2020.

The resources provided through the Global Fund come from many sources and partners, represented today at a signing event by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, the UK Department for International Development, the European Union, Norway, Germany, as well as technical partners such as UNAIDS and WHO.

“I am most appreciative of both the Global Fund and their funding partners for their continued support. The size of the grant is an indication of the growing partnership and confidence between the Republic of Malawi and the Global Fund since 2003,” said Atupele Muluzi, Minister of Health and Population. “Malawi is working to ensure effective implementation of these grants in an accountable and effective manner.”

The grants will support programs aiming to reach the 90-90-90 targets – 90 percent of people living with HIV know their HIV status, 90 percent of people who know their HIV-positive status are accessing treatment and 90 percent of people on treatment have suppressed viral loads – by 2020. The investment will also seek to strengthen the country’s supply-chain management, improve data systems and distribute more than 10 million mosquito nets. Additionally, the funds will bolster efforts to prevent HIV among adolescent girls and young women.

“Malawi is a great example of partnership at work,” said Mark Edington, Head of Grant Management at the Global Fund. “It is great to see the country work with the Global Fund partnership to step up efforts to prevent HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women, as well as introduce reforms in supply-chain management for greater impact against HIV, TB and malaria.”

The grants will be managed by Malawi’s Ministry of Health, ActionAid Malawi and World Vision Malawi. The funding under these grants includes an additional US$33.8 million that the Malawi government has allocated as part of its domestic financing obligations.
