3rd PRIZE in the category BUILDING BETTER SYSTEMS FOR HEALTH, by Clelia Vegezzi:
AVSI Foundation supports 79 health centers covering 3 million people in northern Uganda, guaranteeing access to medical care for pregnant mothers through the “boda-boda” (motorcycle taxi) referral system. “AVSI boda-boda saved my life. I couldn’t afford to pay a motorcycle taxi to Kalongo Hospital. I lost blood due to postpartum hemorrhage and only that facility, 21 km away, would provide the medical assistance I urgently needed,” says 20-year-old Barbara Lamara, shown in the photo with her son Steven.
Mothers in remote villages are provided with telephone numbers of boda-boda riders in their community during the antenatal care visits. The boda-boda riders, who are accessible by mothers 24/7, help them reach the nearest health facility in time for a delivery. They receive training in first aid and road safety skills to ensure provision of essential maternal, neonatal and child health care.
What the jury thought: “A heartfelt story, a fantastic program and unique composition all work together in truly impactful image.”
