General Assembly of the United Nations 74th Session

The 74th Session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will be held 17-30 September 2019 in New York City. This annual gathering features hundreds of events where world leaders will gather to discuss some of the biggest challenges facing us today and drive progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. During the UNGA High-Level Week, the first-ever High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage will also be held to galvanize global commitments to ensure health for all.  

The Global Fund will continue to actively engage with various stakeholders through numerous events at UNGA. Among them:

TB Innovation Summit 2019

TB is the world’s leading infectious disease killer and a major threat to global health security and economic stability. The TB Innovation Summit is an annual event that represents a global convening of key partners and stakeholders, both traditional and non-traditional, at the forefront of exploring and building the next big idea and innovation in TB and global health.

Last Mile to Lyon

Global Fund Advocates Network (GFAN) is organizing a Last Mile to Lyon meeting during the UNGA High-Level Week. This will be a discussion to share thoughts and ideas for collaborative action at UNGA and in the last weeks ahead of the Global Fund Sixth Replenishment in Lyon. There will be updates from GFAN and the GFAN Regional Partners as well as the Global Fund Secretariat.

Putting the U in UHC – Financing for the Furthest Left Behind

We have seen substantial progress in promoting health over the last two decades. However, communities of invisible and vulnerable populations are yet to benefit from the gains made. To reach those populations, we need to improve the generation, allocation and use of funds for health.

The event will highlight approaches to reach invisible populations through sustainable financing. This multistakeholder high-level discussion will be moderated by Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, and Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund, and include perspective from high-level member states, the private sector and civil society organizations.

UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage

The UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage will take place on 23 September during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. This is a great opportunity for all universal health coverage champions and advocates to make your voice heard and help mobilize high-level political attention globally and in your countries.

The theme of the HLM-UHC is “Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World.” This high-level meeting will be the last chance before 2023, the mid-point of the SDGs, to mobilize the highest political support to package the entire health agenda under the umbrella of universal health care, and sustain health investments in a harmonized manner.

Filling the Gap: Successful Funding Models and Partnerships to Ensure a Community-led and Evidence-based Implementation of UHC for All

This event aims to highlight successful funding models and partnerships for supporting a community-led and evidence-based universal health care, driven by data of what is needed and what works. The event will target the 11 multilateral health agencies involved in the Global Action Plan to ensure a global commitment to increase funding for community-led responses; bilateral donors to build the case for more funding for communities; and national governments to increase awareness on the need to broaden the space for communities, including through the provision of funding.

Renewing Commitments towards Enhancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa

The Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) recently launched a new Strategic Plan for 2019-2023, with the advancement of the rights of girls and women in Africa at its core. Since 2012, African First Ladies have increasingly spoken out, mobilized and facilitated change towards gender equality and the empowerment of women. OAFLAD, in collaboration with UNFPA, will convene a high-level forum in the margins of the 74th United Nations General Assembly to address the unfinished business of gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa.

UHC & Accountability: Mapping the Road Towards the #UHCThatWeWant

A Dialogue Between Member States, Communities and Civil Society, and other Key Stakeholders. The session aims to facilitate dialogue on UHC & Accountability, particularly by:

  • Taking stock of alignments between #TheUHCThatWeWant and the 2019 Political Declaration on UHC;
  • Examining existing country, regional, and global accountability frameworks, mechanisms, and structures on UHC;
  • Determining linkages between robust and coherent accountability mechanisms and mobilisation of resources for health from external funding, domestic allocations, and financing innovations; and
  • Fostering the establishment of a partnership between champion Global North and Global South governments and civil society that will support further discussions on a UHC accountability framework development and operationalisation.

Stronger Collaboration, Better Health: Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Wellbeing for All

A high-level meeting will be held during the United Nations General Assembly to launch “The Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All: Strengthening collaboration among multilateral organizations to accelerate country progress on the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.” The Plan sets out a joint approach pledged by 12 global health, development and humanitarian agencies to better support governments to deliver on their commitments to achieve healthy lives and well-being for all by 2030.

Data for Health Equity: Unlocking Health for All

The Rockefeller Foundation and UNICEF are hosting an event exploring the potential of data to revolutionize health around the world. Discussion will feature global health leaders and multisectoral partners on work toward ensuring that all people benefit from advances in data science for health.

Global Citizen Festival

The Global Citizen Festival brings together top artists, world leaders, and everyday activists to take action to end poverty. From 20 to 28 September, Global Citizen is supporting events all over NYC to give Global Citizens a chance to show how they are powering the movement to end global poverty. Global Citizen week coincides with the UN General Assembly, when leaders from around the world gather to discuss the world’s biggest challenges – making it a perfect time to advocate for the voiceless. The week of action-taking starts with a march to support climate action, and ends with the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park.
