Global Fund Commends Portugal’s Pledge to the Eighth Replenishment

25 September 2025

NEW YORK – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund) commends Portugal’s early pledge of €1.5 million to the Eighth Replenishment.

The pledge was announced today in New York on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

Portugal’s renewed support to the Global Fund reflects its strong commitment to fighting the world's deadliest infectious diseases and strengthening health systems.

Ana Isabel Xavier, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal, said: “Portugal stands with the Global Fund, highlighting our commitment to multilateral cooperation, global solidarity and shaping a world where no one is left behind."

Ana Povo, Deputy Minister for Health of Portugal, said: “Portugal is determined to accelerate the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, reduce poverty and advance universal health coverage. By investing in health, we invest in human dignity, social justice and sustainable development, building a fairer and more resilient world for all.”

Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund, said: “We are deeply grateful for Portugal’s pledge. Their unwavering support will strengthen our collective fight against the three diseases while bolstering health systems, including in Lusophone countries.”

Fostering Impact in Lusophone Countries

The Global Fund has a long-standing partnership with Portugal. This relationship is anchored in Camões I.P. at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in Portugal’s Ministry of Health.

With Portugal’s support, the partnership between the Global Fund and Lusophone countries has helped save 3.3 million lives since 2002. In Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste, 2.2 million people were on antiretroviral therapy for HIV, more than 200,000 tuberculosis (TB) cases were treated, and nearly 2.3 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed in 2024. Every life saved, and every infection averted, has a multiplier effect across families, communities and entire nations.

In addition to the financial contribution to the Global Fund, Portugal provides critical technical support to Lusophone countries around the world, including in those where Portuguese-speaking health experts are in shortage.

Portugal is also represented in the Global Fund’s Board, dynamically contributing to shaping Global Fund governance policies.

With support from Portugal and other partners, the Global Fund partnership has saved 70 million lives and reduced the combined death rate from AIDS, TB and malaria globally by 63% over the last two decades.

The Global Fund’s Eighth Replenishment

With this pledge, Portugal joins Australia, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, and Switzerland – as well as several private sector partners – who have all made early pledges to the Global Fund’s Eighth Replenishment. Together, these commitments underscore growing momentum and a global determination to save lives and defeat the world’s deadliest infectious diseases.

The Global Fund’s Eighth Replenishment campaign was launched in February 2025 under the leadership of co-hosts the Republic of South Africa and the United Kingdom

With a successful Replenishment, the Global Fund partnership could help save up to 23 million lives between 2027 and 2029 and reduce the mortality rate from AIDS, TB and malaria by 64% by 2029, compared to 2023 levels, while strengthening health and community systems to fight new outbreaks and accelerate pathways to self-reliance.
