GENEVA – The Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund) approved an 18-month extension for the term of the Inspector General, Tracy Staines, today. The extension of the term until June 2028 will provide continuity of leadership and oversight through a complex time of significant change for the organization and the global health landscape.
The Inspector General of the Global Fund serves a six-year term. Staines was appointed in December 2020 for a term scheduled to end in December 2026.
Through audits and investigations, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) safeguards the assets, investments, reputation and sustainability of the Global Fund, ensuring it takes the right action to accelerate the end of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as public health threats.
“Tracy has done an excellent job in her role as the Inspector General over the past five years,” said Lady Roslyn Morauta, Chair of the Global Fund Board. “This extension will bring leadership continuity to the OIG and to the organization’s senior leadership during a period of major change in the development sector, and a period of strategic importance for the Global Fund.”
The Office of the Inspector General is independent of the Global Fund Secretariat and reports directly to the Board through its Audit and Finance Committee.
“Under Tracy’s leadership the OIG has repeatedly received high marks by industry standards for the quality of their reviews”, said Bience Gawanas, Vice-Chair of the Global Fund Board. “Extending her term will allow the organization to leverage her experience to provide highly informed advice to the Board and the Secretariat.”
The Global Fund’s OIG is composed of 54 auditors, investigators, and other professional staff. The leadership of the organization and the Board believe an independent, well-resourced and transparent OIG is essential for the success of the Global Fund. The organization is committed to the highest standards of accountability in all matters, including the audits and investigations produced by the OIG.
Before being appointed Inspector General in 2020, Staines had over 20 years of multi-sectoral experience in audit and risk management. She joined Global Fund in 2012 and was promoted to Head of Audit in 2015. Staines is the first woman to hold the position of Inspector General at the Global Fund.
Prior to joining the Global Fund, Staines led audit and investigations teams at one of Europe’s largest banks and the UK Civil Service. She began her career with Deloitte, the world’s largest professional services firm, in London and Sydney. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a Chartered Internal Auditor and a qualified member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments.
