GENEVA – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund) is pleased to announce Julia Martin has been selected as the new head of the organization’s strategy and policy department.
Martin has extensive experience with the Global Fund’s governing bodies. She previously served as chair of the organization’s Strategy Committee from 2023 to 2025 and she is currently vice-chair of the Ethics and Governance Committee, a position she will relinquish as she moves into this staff position.
“Julia has worked closely with the Global Fund in multiple capacities for more than 13 years,” said Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund. “She has a proven track record in public health leadership and an excellent history of diplomacy, partnership and results – essential traits for working through the challenging times global health is currently experiencing.”
The head of the Strategy and Policy Hub directs the Global Fund partnership’s priorities to improve global health and accelerate progress against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. She will work closely with the Board to implement the Global Fund’s strategy, oversee the key performance indicators, and coordinate policy development and strategy implementation across all divisions and departments in the organization.
Martin brings more than 25 years’ experience in global public health. She is currently a senior health advisor for the U.S. government. She has worked with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) since 2010, serving multiple roles including deputy coordinator for program quality and chief operating officer responsible for budget, multilateral affairs, country program support, technical leadership and human resources. She began her career as a nurse working in Canada, Zambia and the Dominican Republic.
Martin was selected from a rigorous global recruitment process with more than 200 candidates. She will join the team in early November.
