Global Fund Appoints Michelle Beistle as Chief Risk Officer

18 August 2025

GENEVA – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund) has appointed Michelle Beistle, currently the organization’s Chief Ethics Officer, as Chief Risk Officer, following the decision of the Ethics and Governance Committee (EGC) and the Board to combine the two roles under a single leader.

Earlier this year, the Risk Management Department moved under Michelle’s interim oversight while the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) conducted a review on risk management, and the Risk Management Department and the OIG jointly mapped the organization’s risk and assurance processes. These efforts informed the decision to formalize the combined role, in line with good practice at other international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Gavi.

“The integration of these two critical functions under Michelle’s leadership strengthens our ability to identify, manage and respond to risks while upholding the highest ethical standards,” said Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund. “Michelle’s experience, strategic perspective and proven leadership will be invaluable as we continue to adapt to a complex and fast-changing global health landscape.”

Michelle brings extensive experience in ethics, risk and compliance, having led enterprise risk efforts across organizations and served in both roles on an interim basis over the past six months. She will report directly to the Executive Director on all risk issues and maintain her dual reporting line to the Board through the EGC and the Executive Director on ethics issues.
