Geneva – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria warmly welcomes the announcement made by UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon of Michel Sidibé’s appointment as the new Executive Director of UNAIDS, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS. Dr Sidibe will take over from Peter Piot, who has led UNAIDS from its inception in 1996.

“I am very pleased to learn about the announcement by the Secretary-General,” said Michel Kazatchkine, the Executive Director of the Global Fund. “I am certain that, with Michel’s appointment as Executive Director, the already close partnership between the Global Fund and UNAIDS will continue.”

Dr Sidibé has a long and distinguished career in public health and in the UN system and has been with UNAIDS since 2001. He will take on his role as UNAIDS Executive Director in January 2009.

UNAIDS acts as a key source of strategic analysis, policy advice and technical expertise to help countries access and use the resources of the Global Fund.
