Remembering President Geingob

05 February 2024

The Global Fund expresses its deepest condolences to the people of Namibia on the passing of the country’s president, Hage Geingob.

President Geingob was an African statesman who served the people of his country with great dedication and a deep commitment to democracy and social justice.

He was a champion for equity in global health. He recently extolled Namibia’s progress in controlling HIV, which has resulted in a 65% decline in the number of new HIV infections and a 74% decline in AIDS-related deaths since 2004. That success has contributed significantly to the country’s dramatic change in life expectancy – from age 51 in 2001 to age 63 in 2020.

President Geingob will be remembered as a distinguished leader who fought for the liberation of Namibia and oversaw the drafting of the nation’s constitution. As president, he sought to build a more equitable and inclusive Namibia.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Monica Geingos, and his children during this difficult time.
