Luxembourg Raises Contribution to the Global Fund

29 September 2014

NEW YORK – Luxembourg is increasing its financial commitment to the Global Fund for 2014, thereby unlocking additional contributions from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel announced at the 2014 Global Citizen Festival in New York on Saturday that Luxembourg is making an additional pledge of €500,000 for 2014, in addition to its earlier pledge of €2.5 million. Both the United States and the United Kingdom have geared their own contributions to the Global Fund in a way that maximizes donations by other countries.

“Once more, the people of Luxembourg have shown exceptional commitment and generosity in supporting the Global Fund’s mission of working in partnership to end HIV, TB and malaria as epidemics,” said Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund. “The science is showing us that we have the know-how to control the three diseases if we invest strongly.”

An agreement covering Luxembourg’s additional contribution was signed on Friday by Prime Minister Bettel and Dr. Dybul during the week of the United Nations’ General Assembly.

Luxembourg is the fourth most generous donor to the Global Fund, per capita, after Norway, Sweden and France. Luxembourg’s contribution represents an investment of €5.6 per person to the Global Fund. With a population of just half a million people, Luxembourg commits more than 1 percent of its Gross National Income to Official Development Assistance, making it one of the world’s most generous donors.

Luxembourg subscribes to universal health coverage as an overall goal to be achieved by strengthening health systems; fighting communicable diseases including HIV, TB and malaria; and focusing on women and children’s health.
