Senegal has been part of the Global Fund partnership since 2003. During this time, significant progress has been made in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria in the country.
Key achievements in the country include
- The number of people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment increased from 44% in 2015 to 77% in 2020.
- The number of people living with HIV who know their status increased from 56% in 2015 to 80% in 2020.
- The number of people living with HIV who have suppressed viral loads doubled between 2017 and 2020, from 33% to 65%.
- The TB treatment success rate increased from 86% in 2015 to 91% in 2019.
- The total number of TB deaths decreased by 15% between 2015 and 2019.
- Between 2015 and 2019, malaria cases declined by 28% from 492,000 to 353,000.
- Between 2015 and 2019, malaria deaths declined by 50%.
Private sector partnership
Through a partnership called “Voix EssentiELLES,” the Global Fund and Fondation CHANEL are working together to set up a civil society-led fund to strengthen the engagement of women and girls in developing health policies in Senegal, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. The fund supports women’s and girls’ groups and organizations to increase their engagement in shaping public health programs and policies that address their needs. It also supports women and girls to assume leadership positions in health policy and grant implementation processes with the goal of addressing inequalities that impact their health (Learn more).

Meet Mbayang Fall Bousso, a nurse at CEPIAD, a methadone clinic in Dakar.
Methadone is an opioid substitution therapy that helps reduce people’s dependence on opioid drugs and decreases injecting, which in turn decreases a person’s risk of contracting HIV.
“We work with vulnerable populations,” says Nurse Mbayang. Thanks to dedicated staff like her, the clinic continued to provide services during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have to take preventive measures. All the patients who come here wear masks, wash their hands and we also take their temperatures.”
The Global Fund provides support to CEPIAD through “Breaking Down Barriers” – a bold initiative aimed at vastly scaling up programming and commitments to reduce human rights-related barriers to HIV, TB and malaria services.
